Featured Student: Larry Weru
August 2012
Larry is an FSU Senior with a double major studying both Studio Art and Biology. Upon graduation, Larry plans to utilize his degrees and skills as a medical illustrator. Larry also has an active interest in Web design and development. He took Web design and development courses in PIC and ultimately designed and developed a money-saving and stress-saving mobile ticketing system solution for a local student-operated non-profit fundraiser event: The 2012 FSU Krispy Kreme Challenge (see screenshots below). That mobile ticketing system, named Sentry, earned Larry the “Best in Show – Contribution” award at DigiTech 2012. With the assistance of a grant from FSU's office of Undergraduate Research, Larry is taking Sentry to the next level, creating a state-of-the-art, general-purpose, mobile ticketing system for all kinds of events.
“PIC’s Web Design and Web Development courses revolutionized the way I make web pages. These project-oriented PIC courses just make it easy to learn code. They keep the focus from strictly being about learning syntax and language, and instead allow the end-goal of each project steer the learning. The environment created makes you feel comfortable diving into completely new languages and thought-processes. Although I took the online version of the course, I didn't feel as though I was missing out on anything with the support of the online community. I don't know what I'd be doing right now if it wasn't for PIC. After stumbling around over the years listening to various web gurus telling me what to do, I can wholeheartedly say that there is no better way for an FSU student to learn web design and web-application development than through PIC," says Larry.
